A recognized retail services company in New York City is actively seeking a new HR Compliance Specialist to join its team.
About the Opportunity:
- Start Date: ASAP
- Assignment Length: 6+ months
- Schedule: Monday to Friday
- Hours: 8:30am to 5:30pm
Responsibilities:
- Conduct a full-scale audit of payroll processes, including pay practices, timekeeping, deductions, penalties, commission payments, and overtime calculations
- Review wage & hour compliance across retail stores, including scheduling, meal and rest break practices, and exempt vs. non-exempt classifications
- Assess compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws (e.g., FLSA, state wage orders, paid sick leave, predictive scheduling laws, etc.)
- Audit HR operations practices such as onboarding, training, employee recordkeeping, and store-level compliance documentation
- Identify compliance gaps, process inefficiencies, or risk areas, and prepare detailed reports summarizing findings
- Partner with Talent, Legal, Payroll, and Retail Operations leaders to develop and implement corrective action plans, including updated policies, training, and process improvements
- Support remediation through direct project management, drafting policies/procedures, training managers, and working with payroll/Talent Ops teams on system fixes
- Provide clear written and verbal updates to senior leadership on progress, risks, and successful resolution of issues
Qualifications:
- 7+ years of experience in HR Compliance, Payroll Auditing, or Wage & Hour Law
- Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources, Business, or related field
- Strong knowledge of Federal, State, and Local Labor laws
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and project management skills
Desired Skills:
- HR compliance certification (e.g., PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP/SCP)
- Experience with California Wage & Hour compliance
- Experience in a Retail and/or Multi-state environment
