A leading nonprofit organization in New York City is seeking an experienced Director of Social Services to oversee operations at a transitional family shelter serving 50+ families. This role combines leadership, crisis management, and hands-on social services expertise to ensure high-quality client care and program compliance.
Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise a multidisciplinary social services team of 8+ staff, including case managers, housing specialists, and coordinators
- Oversee daily operations of the Social Services Department, ensuring program goals and compliance with DHS and city regulations
- Provide crisis intervention and de-escalation support for staff and clients
- Conduct weekly supervisions, performance evaluations, and staff development
- Manage administrative and compliance functions, including chart audits, reporting, and database maintenance (CARES, CTS, NYC Way, 4002)
- Serve as 24/7 on-call emergency contact (phone only)
- Support client families in achieving permanent housing placements and maintaining stability
Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience in a Family and/or Single Shelter setting
- Master’s Degree in Social Work, Mental Health Counseling, or a related Human Services field
- Previous experience in a Supervisory role
- Computer savvy
- Strong organizational and crisis management abilities
Desired Skills:
- Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) and/or Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC)
- Bilingual
- Experience with CARES database
